German and U.S. officials deny that German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer ever suggested cutting U.S. aid to Israel. A spokesperson for the German Embassy in Washington said such a recommendation would have contradicted decades of German support for Israel. Last week, there were reports, based on the comments of a U.S. official, that Fischer made the suggestion to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell as a way to pressure Israel to reach a cease-fire with the Palestinian Authority.
