Dr. Julius Magnus. one of the most prominent lawyers in Germany and the editor of the leading legal publication in the country, celebrated his sixtieth birthday today.
The Legal Faculty of the University of Frankiurt in honor of the occasion conferred an honorary doctorate on him. The Prussian Minister of Justice called to-day to express his congratulations. Other visitors were the representatives of the Legal Faculty of Berlin University of the Solicitors’ Association the Law Society, and other bodies.
Dr. Magnus was for many years a member of the Board of the Berlin Jewish Community and is as present a member of the Curatorium of the German Keren Hayesod.
Charges that the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan were responsible for riots, attempted lynchings and kidnappings and operated a supersecret order known as the Black Robe Society, which punished disobedient Klan members are contained in affidavits filed in the Federal District Court, Pittsburgh. Pa.
The affidavits were in support of the bill of complaint filed by five former members of the Klan who are seeking to have the Klan restrained from operating in Pennsylvania and who are asking for appointment of a receiver for the property and funds of the organization.
Plans have been completed for the program of the 17th annual convention of the New Jersey Federation of Young Men’s and Young Women’s Hebrew Associations, to be held in Trenton, Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9. in conjunction with the 10th anniversary celebration of the Trenton Association.
Speakers will include Justice Joseph M. Proskauer. Justice of the Supreme Court of New York and president of the 92nd Street Y. M and Y. W. H. A. New York City. Another speaker will be Rabbi Louis M. Wolsey of Philadelphia.
Attorney General Ottinger’s investigation of a supposed poultry trust to raise the price of kosher poultry for the coming high holidays brought a promise from poultry slaughterhouse propristors to maintain a fair prce, it was revealed at the heaving before Referce Joseph Rosaisky at the Attorney General’s office.
Mr. Ottinger announced receipt of a letter from Benjamin Simon, Supervisor of the Greater New York Live Poultry Chamber of Commerce saying it had passed the following resolutions:
“To ‘discourage and prevent’ the practice of telling retail chicken dealers the slaughter house at which they must trade: and to sell at 5 cents a pound more than the wholesale price of fowl and 7 cents for spring chickens. Any member breaking the promise will be expelled, according to the letter.”
Denials of the stories of violence and intimidation told by kosher chicken dealers were given at the hearing by three slaughterhouse proprietors who had been mentioned.
Young Israel of Jamaica dedicated its new quarters at 153rd street near Hillside avenue, Jamaica. N. Y., at exercises which were attended by more than 250 persons.
Dr. David S. Stern of New York City. pronounced the benediction Among the other speakers were Aaro Lauer, president of the local organization; Samuel Gottesman, chairman of the building committee; Moses Koenig, national president of Young Israel, and Samuel Cohen president of the Manhattan Young Israel.
The new clubhouse was acquired after a drive for funds conducted last spring. It contains assembly, reception, library and class rooms.
