German Jews opened a new synagogue, laid the cornerstone for a second and opened a community center in three different cities this week-end.
In ceremonies attended by German church dignitaries, representatives of the Federal and provincial governments and leading Jews, the Dusseldorf Jewish Community consecrated its new synagogue, the 12th to be constructed in West Germany since the end of the Nazi regime. The modern building has a 400-seat synagogue, a small prayer room for 70, a mikvah and rooms for meetings and classes.
At Essen, members of the local Jewish community and representatives of Christian churches and the local government turned out for ceremonies marking the laying of a cornerstone for a new synagogue. A community center with school and club facilities was opened at Augsburg.
