The Government majority in the Bundestag yesterday rejected a Social Democratic motion to increase the allocations for indemnification purposes from $38,000,000 to $60,000,000. The action was taken at the second and third readings of the Federal budget for 1955-56.
The Social Democratic motion was made by Jeanette Wolf, herself a concentration camp veteran, who was congratulated earlier in the session by the Bundestag Speaker the occasion of her sixty-seventh birthday. In a bitter speech in which she motion names and cited figures, she contrasted the large pensions readily granted Nazi officers with the miserly payments to Nazi victims. Her demands that the indemnification program be speeded up at long last was supported by other speakers, but when the motion came to a vote, it was turned down, with only a half dozen deputies outside her own parry supporting it.
Minister of Finance H. Schaeffer said that the $38,000,000 appropriation was merely an “estimate,” which could be increased later, if that were necessary.
