The Mayor of this village has decided to prevent a performance of Rolf Hochhuth’s “The Deputy” by turning out the lights at the theater. Two performances of the play, which criticizes the late Pope Pius XII for not speaking out against the Nazis mess murders of the Jews, were scheduled here by the Dusseldorf Kammerspiele troupe.
At a special session of the local council, it was decided to uphold the Mayor’s decision to refuse to supply city electricity for the lighting. It is expected, however, that the producers will try to obtain some form of portable lighting so that the play can go on.
