Settlers of Sdot Yam–located near the ancient Roman port of Caesarea–have found what they describe as a “startling discovery in the annals of Palestine archaeology”–a giant statue executed in red porphyry of a seated figure dressed in a Roman toga.
The head and forearms of the statue, which is double life size, are missing. The figure was discovered between what was once a Roman hippodrome and the well of the municipal hall. Experts from the Israel Government’s Department of Antiquities are investigating.
