Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, arrived in this city, the site of the oldest continuous Jewish settlement in the New World, today, during his ten-day tour to some of the oldest Jewish settlements in the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Goldstein’s mission precedes the American Jewish Tercentenary celebrations which open in the United States next Sunday.
Paying tribute to these Caribbean settlements as the “alma mater” of Jewish life in the United States, Dr. Goldstein declared that the Jewish community of the U.S., celebrating its 300th anniversary, “turns its face and its heart reverently and gratefully to its antecedents in the southern and central part of this hemisphere as well as to the Old World, the continent of Europe. Likewise, we turn our faces and our hearts, together with all of you, to the old-new land of Israel, just as we turn in our prayers toward Jerusalem.”
