Since Israel cannot compete with other nations in production but must reach high quality levels, the government will establish technical schools and training centers for artisans, Premier David Ben Gurion declared here last night at a meeting of Israel’s Association of Artisans.

Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan told the representatives of some 20,000 Jewish artisans that the government will prepare in the next few weeks for general industrial development. He warned the delegates to expect further demands for economic sacrifices. It was also reported at the meeting that discussions are under way to convene a world congress of Jewish artisans.

A total of 71,000 immigrants now living in temporary camps will be housed in permanent accommodations by next February, it was learned today. From the establishment of the Jewish state until Sept 1 about 285,000 immigrants have entered Israel. The figure for August alone is 13,500. Of the newcomers, 214,000 are living in 3,000 housing units built by the Jewish Agency and 40,000 housing units prepared by the Agency from abandoned Arab houses in towns and villages. Some of the immigrant camps will be turned into permanent settlements for employees of public work developments and afforestation projects.
