Jewish-owned shops and businesses in the Greek capital closed today as the Jewish community celebrated the first anniversary of the establishment of the state of Israel. The Great Synagogue was packed as thousands crammed into it to offer prayers of thanksgiving.
At noon Asher Moisses, Israeli consul, laid a wreath on a monument honoring Greece’s Unknown Soldier. His action was cheered by a huge throng of bystanders. The Jews at the ceremony were visibly moved as they heard the Hatikvah played for the first time by the Royal Guards band. An official reception was tendered at Parnassus Hall by the consul. The affair was attended by Greek Government officials.
