David Ben Gurion today declared that his recent ?posal for an independent Jewish state in part of Palestine, with the Mandate re?ning in force in the other sections, was his own private opinion and did not rep?ent the viewpoint of the Jewish Agency. He made this statement at a meeting of the ?ncy executive.
The proposal aroused a great furor and was sharply criticized in the United states by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver. It was made in an address to last week’s meeting the Assefath Hanivcharim, the Jewish national assembly.
An attempt to unify the two Jewish Communist groups in Palestine was made ? by the pro-Zionist Communist Association, which has about 1,000 members. Its ? was directed to the Palestine Communist Party, which has about 4,000 members, ? which is considered anti-Zionist. The Association proposed a merger of the two ? to avoid a “double appearance” before the U.N. inquiry committee. It points ? that the Gromyko statement has altered the situation and necessitates a consolidation of Communist ranks.
Meanwhile, the Arab Communists, who go under the name of the League of National Liberation and claim a membership of 20,000, seem to be modifying their strong anti-Zionist policy and are advocating rapprochement with the Jews, particularly the Jewish Communists. At the same time, they are pressing the Arab worker groups to ? a moderate attitude towards Jewish demands and have attacked Emil Ghoury of the Palestine Arab Higher Committee for his violent anti-Jewish statements at the United Nations session on Palestine.
