Peel Cup All-Stars defeated the Haguibor Maccabees, of Palestine, 4 to 1, here yesterday. Over 12,000 spectators witnessed the match.
The Palestine players goal was scored by Rosenberg after two minutes of play.
June 26 has been designated Palestine Day by the Zionist Organization of America in honor of the Maccabee Soccer Team, the all-Jewish team from Palestine.
On that day the Maccabees will meet the Indiana Flooring Team at the Polo Grounds, New York. The Indiana Flooring team is considered the strongest opposition the Maccabees have met so far.
Palestine Day will be celebrated with a Maccabee Sports Festival at the Polo Grounds. It was announced that Mayor James J. Walker will kick off the ball. An additional feature of the day will be the presence of 15,000 Jewish school children, who will unite in singing Jewish songs.
In his message proclaiming June 26th Palestine Day Louis Lipsky, president of the Zionist Organization of America, said:
“During the few weeks of their stay in this country the Maccabees of Palestine have already displayed a courage, determination and perseverence which is symbolic of the spirit of the pioneers of the Jewish Homeland. Against almost overwhelming odds they have emerged the victors. These Jewish players from Palestine have gained the admiration and respect of all American Jews. To Zionists especially has their high courage been an incentive for increased effort for Palestine. If the Jewish Homeland is capable of oroducing so sterling a group of men, then no work for the upbuilding of Palestine is in vain. Palestine Day is designed as an official welcome to the Palestinian players as it is also designed to stimulate interest in Palestine. All Zionists are urged to observe Palestine Day in honor of the visiting all-Jewish Palestinian team.”
Patriotic greetings from the Mayors of seven communities in New York and New Jersey were carried to Mayor W. Freeland Kendrick by runners representing Young Men’s Hebrew Associations, for 135 miles in a road run from New York to Philadelphia on Sunday. This road run commemorated the sesqui-centennial of the adoption of the American Flag, and each runner carried in addition to the message from the Mayor of his community, an American flag and a greeting from the president of the organization which he represented.
The run was held under the auspices of the Metropolitan League of Jewish Community Associations affiliated with the Jewish Welfare Board, representing Y. M. H. A.’s in New York in cooperation with the Y. M. H. A.’s in New Jersey and Philadelphia. Two hundred men participated in the run.
Among the 173 Princeton seniors who will be graduated today with academic honors in their departmental work for the last two years are 8 Jewish students, winning high honors in the classics, economies, politics, history, modern languages and geology.
Twenty Jewish students are among the 460 graduated from Smith College yesterday.
