Haifa Mayor Arye Gurel has threatened to operate the city-owned Carmelit subway on the Sabbath if the Aguda Israel Party gets its way and persuades the incoming government to try and halt public transport in Haifa on Shabbat. Haifa still operates buses on the Sabbath — a carryover from the pre-State days when Arabs formed a large proportion of the public.
