The Committee appointed by Harvard University to consider the question of limitation of admissions today recommended that “Harvard maintain its traditional policy of freedom from discrimination on grounds of race or religion”. The committee was formed following the recent reports that the administration of Harvard looked with disfavor upon the growing percentage of Jewish students.
The committee reported against proportional representation, arbitrary limitations or any “novel process of scrutiny”. It recommended instead elimination of inferior students by the stiffening of the entrance requirements as to English and proposed that the proportion of students from the south and west be increased by admitting students from schools in those sections on certificate and without the necessity of taking entrance examinations.
Jewish members of the faculty on the committee were Professors Paul J. Sachs, Milton J. Rosenau and Assistant Professor Harry A. Wolfson.
