Aaron Benjamin, vice-president of Hias, who left for Europe on May 4th, to take up the work of European commissioner of the organization, has been making a tour of emigration countries during the past six weeks for the purpose of studying conditions with a view to ascertaining steps to be taken in connection with preparing Jewish emigrants for life in the new countries.
In a cablegram from Warsaw to Abraham Herman, president of Hias, Mr. Benjamin reports: “I have been in Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, France and Germany, and find that more work will have to be done for and among the Jewish emigrants in their native countries before leaving, because they are more helpless at home than they are abroad. Hias-Ica-Emigdirekt has to stand by the side of the emigrants in every move that they make, to prepare for departure, especially in view of the numerous details, attending to visas, passports and other documents. Hicem work is therefore indispensable in emigration countries.”
