Hitler Hints Bread Cards May Be Issued in Reich

THE POSSIBILITY THAT GERMANY’S ACUTE FOOD SHORTAGE MAY FORCE THE NAZI REGIME TO ISSUE BREAD CARDS IN THE NEAR FUTURE TROUBLED GOVERNMENT CIRCLES TODAY, THE HAVAS NEWS AGENCY REPORTED.

THE COUNTRY’S FOOD SHORTAGE WAS BROUGHT TO THE FORE BY CHANCELLOR HITLER AND MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE WALTER DARRE IN SPEECHES AT THE ANNUAL HARVEST FESTIVAL NEAR BAD PYRMONT ON SUNDAY IN WHICH THEY CALLED FOR POPULAR COOPERATION IN THE GOVERNMENT’S STRUGGLE WITH THIS PROBLEM.

“CONSUMPTION MUST BE ORGANIZED TO MEET EXISTING RESOURCES,” THE CHANCELLOR SAID IN APPEALING FOR COOPERATION FROM THE PUBLIC. “WE LACK WHEAT BUT HAVE ENOUGH RYE AND AN ABUNDANCE OF POTATOES. PERSONS LIVE FROM DAY TO DAY AND WOULD ONLY BE AWARE OF THIS IF A GREAT WANT SHOULD OCCUR. THEN THE FACT AN ERROR HAD BEEN COMMITTED WOULD BE REALIZED. IT IS THE TASK OF THE GOVERNMENT TO ISSUE INSTRUCTIONS ORGANIZING THE PEOPLE’S MODE OF LIVING.”

OBSERVERS HELD THE VIEW THESE STATEMENTS, WHICH WERE DELETED FROM THE OFFICIAL VERSION OF THE SPEECH, INDICATED BREAD CARDS, IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER, WOULD BE ISSUED SHORTLY.
