Hope that the day will come when there will be an American section of the Jewish Agency which will represent the Jews of the United States, Zionists and non-Zionists, not only in connection with Palestine but which will be the articulate voice on behalf of the Jews throughout the world was voiced by Judge William Lewis of Philadelphia, Grand Master of the Independent Order of Brith Sholom, in his presidential address to the more than 300 delegates here for the Order’s 25th annual convention.
Judge Lewis pointed out that the work of other bodies duplicating each other and “attempting at times to rival each other could much better be done by such a representative body”. A beginning in that direction has been made by the Allied Jewish Campaign, he said. Judge Lewis urged that all members of the Brith Sholom join the Zionist Organization of America and recommended that this suggestion receive the consideration of the convention.
On behalf of the Zionist Organization, Louis Lipsky, its president, extended greetings in an address in which he deplored the lack of cooperation of England in Palestine. He said that the Jews had been placed in the position of contenders for rights, instead of being given rights without asking. Mr. Lipsky attacking the method of England’s administering the Mandate.
He charged that the party in power in England was more interested in perpetuating itself than in justice for the Jews. It gives concession to the Arabs, he declared, but no help to the Jews. Calling attention to the various protest meetings he asked for moral and financial support in the face of all opposition.
