A record crowd, estimated at half a million persons, poured into this city to witness yesterday afternoon’s celebration of the Purim festival, renewed after a lapse of 20 years. They saw a parade that stretched along seven and a half kilometers of the city’s main streets, featuring colorful floats, including two representing New Orleans and Frascati, Italay.
The floats depicted various periods of Jewish history–Purim festivities since the time of Queen Esther, the rebirth of Israel, and the growth of Tel Aviv, among others. Another feature of the parade, which was witnessed by Premier Moshe Sharett and other Cabinet ministers, was the participation of 8,000 secondary school students who would along the parade route demonstrating various styles of folk dancing.
