The Israel Government today denounced the Hungarian Government’s charges of espionage levelled against Joseph Walter, cultural attache at the Israel legation in Budapest.
In a note to the legation, the Hungarian Government yesterday declared that Mr. Walter had “committed spying activities, abusing his diplomatic privileges,” and expelled him from the country. Although it rejected the charges, the Israel Government ordered Mr. Walter, who is a member of a Hashomer Hatzair kibbutz, to return home.
An Israel Foreign Office spokesman said that the “unfounded” charges against Mr. Walter are a continuation of the campaign of vilification of Israeli diplomats in Eastern Europe which was begun at the Prague trial. The spokesman called it another anti-Zionist, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic manifestation.
