Informed that France’s half-million Jews increased their contributions to the French-United Jewish Appeal last year by more than 20 percent over 1970, for a total of close to $10 million, the 500 delegates to the UJA’s conference last weekend passed a resolution calling for an even higher sum this year. The UJA divides its funds between Israel and the Fonds Social Juif Unifie (FSJU), the local welfare fund. Alfred Zemour, deputy director of the Appeal, noted that although more money was raised in 1971 than ever before, there were fewer contributors. He said the Appeal had lost 11,000 contributors of a total of 45,000. Baron Guy de Rothschild, FSJU head, and Prof. Ady Steg, head of CRIF, underlined the need for development of local community structures, youth activities, culture and “the drawing into the community’s leadership of the country’s intellectual elite.”
