Iranian President Mohammad Khatami lashed out at Israel during a historic five- day trip to Saudi Arabia, the first by an Iranian leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Khatami reportedly said during a speech at King Abdul Aziz University that Israel is threatening security in the Persian Gulf. The “oppression of the Zionist regime is the most important cause of insecurity in the Gulf and the Islamic world,” he was quoted as saying by the Reuters news service.
