A youth was cleared today of charges of defacing the flag of a friendly country when the magistrate ruled that it had not been proved that West Germany is friendly to Israel. Last year, on Holocaust memorial day. 23-year-old Shalom Goldberg of Hebron climbed a pole at Jerusalem’s Convention Centre and tore strips from the black, red and gold West German flag. The magistrate said today that diplomatic relations were not in themselves proof of friendly ties, and that the State had failed to document Germany’s friendship.
