Arieh Levavi, the Israel Ambassador declared persona non grata by the Argentine Government in the Adolf Eichmann case, left today for Israel via Paris. Argentina declared Mr. Levavi persona non grata after rejecting an Israeli apology in Eichmann’s abduction and demanding the Nazi war criminal’s return and punishment of his abductors.
Mr. Levavi was seen off at the airport by a group of local Jewish leaders and besieged by journalists. He declined to say anything to the press representatives.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry did not send anyone to the airport, an omission which was considered an act of courtesy since normally any individual leaving the country as persona non grata must be certified officially as having departed.
Dr. Shabtai Rosenne, the legal adviser to the Israel Foreign Ministry who arrived here last weekend, will remain for a whole week. It was reported unofficially that he was working out some kind of understanding with Argentine officials to resolve the deadlock over the abduction of Eichmann.
Several anti-Jewish manifestations were reported yesterday and today in Buenos Aires and shouts of “death for the Jews” were heard.
