The Israel Agricultural Ministry and the United Nations Technical Assistance Board have signed an agreement for a 30-month experiment aimed at increasing Israel’s basic water resources, it was disclosed today.
The agreement provides that Israel will invest 2, 000, 000 pounds (about $1, 100, 000) and the board will invest $342, 000 in a program to dam groundwater for irrigation. At the present time, millions of gallons of water run unchecked into the Mediterranean Sea.
Officials said that if the experiment works, Israel’s water resources will be increased by six percent and irrigated areas by 11 percent,
