The Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, approved today an amendment to Israel’s marriage law which gives the courts discretion in permitting marriages of girls between 16 and 17.
The minimum age for marriage remains 17. Until adoption of the amendment, the courts could permit marriage of a girl under 17 only to a man who had made her pregnant or by whom she bore a child. This condition is now abolished.
