Israel has protested to Egypt over the publication of a cartoon in the Cairo newspaper Al-Gomhouriya depicting Adolf Hitler presenting a swastika-shaped medal to Premier Menachem Begin. Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir delivered the protest Friday to Egyptian Ambassador Sood Mortoda and told the envoy that the cartoon was “shameful, a disgrace.”
The cartoon showed Begin holding a whip in one hand and a poster in the other which stated: “Polities of foits accomplish, annexation of land by force, ridiculing international resolutions, ill-treatment of prisoners, and Greater Israel.” Hitler was shown leaning down and presenting Begin with the medal. The comment underneath read: “Excellent, Begin.”
