Israel plans to release about 1,000 Palestinian prisoners by the end of the month.

Israel released some 1,000 prisoners in September after it reached an accord with the Palestinians for extending autonomy in the West Bank.

The accord, known as the Interim Agreement, calls for a second prisoner release on the eve of the holding of Palestinian elections, scheduled for late January.

The ministerial committee on prisoner releases met Wednesday to draw up a list of those to be set free.

Environment Minister Yossi Sarid said no prisoners who had been convicted of killing Israelis would be released.
