Israel’s prime minister kicked off a three-day mission to Europe.
During his trip, which started Sunday, Ehud Olmert will meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in an attempt to get their support for Israel’s negotiating stance with the Palestinians at next month’s U.S.-sponsored peace conference. Olmert also will discuss tightening sanctions on Iran.
The prime minister will try to deflect some of the pressure the European community is expected to put on the Jewish state during and after the conference to make major concessions to the Palestinians.
Olmert is also expected to present the leaders with intelligence information about Iran’s growing nuclear threat, as well as Israel’s concern with the lack of international action on that front.
