Israeli army chaplains reportedly are facing a shortage of Torah scrolls for use by religious soldiers in the field. In response, the National Council of Young Israel, a U.S.-based umbrella group for 150 Orthodox synagogues, is asking American Jewish communities and synagogues to donate extra Torah scrolls to help solve the problem.
