Israeli Health Minister Quits

Haim Ramon, Israel’s health minister resigned Sunday after the Cabinet last week rejected a health care reform measure he had strongly backed.

Ramon submitted his letter of resignation at the regular weekly Cabinet session.

The Cabinet endorsed a Labor Party decision to reject health care legislation that would have broken the link between two of the party’s longtime sources of influence, the Histadrut trade union and Kupat Holim Clalit, Israel’s leading health maintenance organization.

Ramon said the Kupat Holim-Histadrut tie contributed most to Labor’s unpopularity.
