Israeli Justice Ministry Names First Arab Magistrate; Held Same Position Under Mandate

The Israeli Ministry of Justice today announced the appointment of the first Arab to an official position within the Israeli court system. He is Aliz Jarjura, who served as a magistrate under the Palestine Mandate Government, and who has been named to the same position in Nazareth.

Aubrey Eban, Israeli representative to the United Nations, today changed his name to Abba Eben in line with the general policy toward Hebraization of names. In Hebrew Eben means “stone.”

The appointment of Azriel Schwartz as counsellor of the Israeli legation in Warsaw was announced today. Schwartz is a member of the United Workers Party and was formerly editorial secretary of the party organ Hamishmar.
