The Tel Aviv district court yesterday committed Hirsch Birenblatt, 50, assistant conductor of the Israeli Opera, for trial on charges of aiding the Nazis in Poland and handing over to them thousands of Jewish victims.
The musician had been recognized by a number of survivors of the Polish ghettos and arrested. At first he had decided to forego a preliminary hearing but changed his mind. Trial was ordered at the hearing. The musician said he was tried on similar charges in Poland but had been acquitted.
