One Israeli soldier was killed and nine injured in daylong artillery and tank gun duels across the Suez Canal along a 100-mile front from Kantara in the north to Suez in the south. A railroad worker from El Arish was also killed in the shooting and two other railway workers were injured.
Calm was restored only after six attempts by United Nations observers to obtain agreements to a cease-fire. Israeli officials said that on each occasion the Egyptians violated the cease-fire and resumed shooting. The gunnery duels subsided first in the Kantara and Ismailia area and later in the Suez area.
Israeli units replied to each Egyptian firing. It was reported that Egyptian gun positions near the two centers of the fighting were heavily hit. The latest outburst began early this morning when Egyptians fired machine guns at an Israeli patrol in the Ismailia area, later firing from tank guns.
