Simon Peres, director general of Israel’s Ministry of Defense, appealed today to the Israeli people to remain calm and not exaggerate the significance of developments in the neighboring Arab states. Addressing a meeting of principals of agricultural high schools, the defense chief said Israel must strive to keep its armed forces on a top technical level in view of developments in modern warfare and maintain a balance with the Arab armies.
The Arab League has recommended to all Arab governments that they prevent their Jewish nationals from travelling abroad, it was reported here today. The League asserted that Jews in Arab countries obtain travel documents for a trip to Turkey and when they arrive there continue on to Israel.
Counterfeit one and ten pound Israeli notes have been traced to Egyptian manufacture, it was revealed here today by Israel State Bank sources. So far the bank has been unable to establish whether the notes were printed by the Egyptian authorities as a form of economic warfare against Israel, or whether the counterfeiting is a “private enterprise.”
The phony one pound bills first made their appearance during the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip. The ten pound notes showed up more recently. The bills were easily spotted because the engraver used a non-existent serial number.
