Premier David Bon Gurion, acting in behalf of the Israel Government, and the Jewish Agency have convened a three-day meeting with American Jewish communal leaders to discuss American Jewish communal assistance for the economic development of Israel during the next three years, the Premier’s Office announced here in a communique issued this afternoon.
At the meeting, which will open in Jerusalem September 3, a complete review of the economic problems confronting the Jewish state will be presented to the American leaders, and their advice will be sought on matters of economic, financial and development policy, with special bearing on the problem of continued large-scale immigration and absorption, the communique stated. It added that it is not intended to lay before the meeting any definite plans, but rather to decide on a course of future action in light of the developing discussion between the Israelis and the Americans.
The communique listed among the expected American participants Zionist leaders and representatives of the United Jewish Appeal, United Palestine Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. After pointing out who the Americans at the parley will be, the communique added that it is “confidently expected” that they will bring to bear “their many years of experience” in dealing with the problems of the economic development of Israel and an “intimate knowledge” of financing possibilities in the United States.
Finally, it announced that similar consultations are contemplated with representatives of the Jewish communities of other countries.
GENERAL ZIONISTS ASK RECONVENING OF KNESSET
A joint conference of members of the General Zionist Party’s executive and its deputies in the Knesset this week-end decided to call upon Joseph Sprinzak, Acting President and Speaker of the House, to immediately reconvene the Parliament. The parley urged the action so that the Parliament could consider methods of dealing with what it called the deteriorating economic situation and for a reexamination of foreign policy in terms of the changing international situation.
Addressing a mass meeting in Tel Aviv last night, Menahem Beigin, head of the right-wing Herut Party, called for a new national coalition to govern Israel. Referring to the international situation, Mr. Beigin warned against the possibility of infringement of Israel’s sovereignty as a result of the East-West conflict. Be charged that the arming of the Arabs means “strangling” of Israel and urged that the Israel delegation at the United Nations be instructed to work against the rearmament of Germany.
Mapai members of the Council of Kibbutzim, governing body of the collective settlement movement of Israel, this week-end walked out of a closed meeting of the Council in protest against what they called a move to pack a kibbutz, with a Mapai, leftwing Socialist, majority. The Mapam-controlled Council adopted a resolution ordering the Mapai-controlled Kibbutz Ashdot Yaacov to accept a group of Mapam youth as settlers. The Mapai members of the Council left in protest, warning that if the resolution were adopted they would consider it invalid and not binding upon them.
