Moses A, Leavitt, executive vice-chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, left Brazil today following a study which he made here on the possibilities of Jewish immigration to Brazil. During his stay in this country, Mr. Leavitt was honored by Jewish communities in San Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and conferred with local Jewish leaders on various aspects of immigration.
Prior to his departure, Mr. Leavitt said that more than 1, 200 Jews have been helped by the JDC and HIAS to migrate this year to Brazil. About 900 of them have become economically self-sufficient in Brazil, while the remainder are dependent on JDC relief. The majority of these Jews had left Israel and entered Germany illegally.
