Japanese officials unveiled a plaque in Tokyo to commemorate a Japanese diplomat who saved thousands of Jews when he served as a consul in Lithuania during World War II. “We praise Chiune Sugihara’s courageous and humanitarian act, conducted in an extreme situation amid the Nazi persecution of Jews,” Foreign Minister Yohei Kono said at the ceremony.
