Jewish Child Delinquency Lessened, Says Mrs. Menken

Comparing social service for children of twenty-five years ago with that of today, Mrs. Mortimer M. Menken, vice president of the Jewish Board of Guardians, declared yesterday at the monthly meeting of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations held in the community house of Temple Emanu-El that the number to Jewish children in juvenile courts has decreased from thirty-three percent in in 1912 to twelve perent. in 1930.

Mrs Menken, who is a member of the bureau of Social Service of the State Board of Parole, said that the larger percentage in the past had been due to “inadequate reoligious teaching and to the poor public education of the time. “Despite the fact that we wee see headines that juvenile deliquency is on the up trend,” she continued, “we do not find as many arrests as befor. It is the parents who have often-temes been the delinquents and not the children.”

Dr. Jacob Katz, rabbi of montefiore Congregation, the Bronz, and chaplain at Sing Sing Prison, told the delegates at the meeding that Jewish convicts always show an interest in Judaism. “One of the main reasons they are in prison,” he declred, “is the neglect of Jewish training in their youth.” He said that the best way of fighting crime among Jews is by “interesting yourselves in constructive Jewish education.”

Mrs. Julius Ochs Adler appealed to the Federation for support of the Thrift House, a rummage shop conducted by the Federation a 9 West 57th street.
