The altar that ###hua built at the command of Moses ###er the Israelites captured Jericho and ### is believed to have been discovered, ###ording to a despatch received here the “Catholic Standard and Times” ### Jerusalem. The Rev. Raphael Canneau, archaeo###st and professor at the Ecole Bib### de St. Etienne, who is now in Palestine, after examining authorities on ### subject, and traversing the ground, served a valley that runs up to the two flanks of Mount Hebal and Mount Garizim, forming an amphitheatre.
This seems to correspond to the Biblical account of the location of Joshua’s altar, since the people, seated in this amphitheatre, with the ark and altar at the base, would be “by Mount Garizim” and “by Mount Hebal.”
Father Canneau found near the spot where he had theoretically placed the altar, seven great blocks of stone, disposed in a semi-circle, with a broad stone at the center. The central stone, the archaeologist said, was of such height that it might serve as an altar.
Examples of Semitic altars have already been found, but this is believed to be the first example of an authentic Israelitic altar.
