The American Jewish Committee and World Jewish Congress, in messages to President Arturo Frondizi of Argentina, who arrived here yesterday on a visit of state, today expressed the welcome of the Jewish community.
Irving M. Engel, president of the Committee, expressed confidence, in his message, that President Frondizi’s visit to the United States “will serve further to cement the ties of friendship and fellowship among our two peoples, and will be of great value in the advancement of the cause of democracy in the Western Hemisphere.”
Mr. Engel added that he and other members of the AJC delegation which recently toured South America “recall with gratification the memorable meeting we had with you at the Casa Rosada on the occasion of our visit to Buenos Aires last August, in the course of a special mission to South America.
“As we stated during our talk with you, we are deeply concerned about the plight of thousands of our co-religionists now emigrating from countries under Communist domination and other places of tension and danger, and seeking havens and new homes in democratic lands. We take this opportunity to express our earnest hopes that your great nation will open its doors to as many of these desperate and worthy persons as possible in the near future. “
Dr. Maurice L. Perlzweig, director of the WJC international affairs department, informed Dr. Frondizi that Jews throughout the world were conscious of the President’s “firm espousal of the democratic cause” and were deeply appreciative of his “friendship for the Jewish people and the State of New York. ” Dr. Perlzweig also expressed the World Jewish Congress’ “pride in the participation of Argentine Jewry in the renascence of democratic institutions” in that country.
