“Jewish schools are draining their last resources of teachers supply, and there is nothing in sight to relieve the critical situation, ” Dr. Samuel Blumenfield, superintendent of the Board of Jewish Education, reported at the Board’s annual community assembly.
New teachers, Dr. Blumenfield said, could be attracted only through improvement of their material and social status. He urged that within five years all schools affiliated with the Board initiate nursery education; that those congregations wishing to drop their Sunday schools be encouraged; that all continuing Sunday schools open at least a two-day Hebrew school; and that three or four new all-day schools be founded with the Board assisting in the Jewish phase of the curriculum. Students now enrolled in Board schools total 16,500.
