Forty-nine graduates of the rabbinical department of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America were ordained as rabbis here today at the Seminary’s annual commencement exercises. In addition, 18 graduates of the Teachers Institute-Seminary College of Jewish Studies were awarded diplomas; and six certificates were given to graduates of the Cantors Institute-Seminary College of Jewish Music.
Six honorary degrees were awarded at the exercise. The recipients were U.S. Circuit Court Judges Irving R. Kaufman and Thurgood Marshall; Dr. Edmond N. Cahn, professor of law at New York University; Dr. Edward T. Sandrow, ex-president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America; Dr. Bernard Heller, author; and Dr. S. Ralph Harlow, professor emeritus of religion and Biblical literature at Smith College.
Twenty congregations were cited for their roles in preparing eight of this year’s rabbinical graduates. The ceremonies today also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the arrival in this country of the late Dr. Solomon Schechter, president of the Seminary from 1902 until his death 1915.
