Francis Cardinal Spellman was yesterday awarded the Jewish War Veterans Medal of Merit by JWV National Commander Malcolm A. Tarlov in recognition of the Cardinal’s role in Vietnam and elsewhere as Military Vicar of the Armed Forces.

The first JWV life membership awarded a veteran of Vietnam was bestowed upon Col. Melvin Garten, much-decorated Jewish paratroop officer wounded in recent action.
