The Jews of Berlin will not leave the city, notwithstanding the fact that they have been advised to do so, Heinz Galinski, representative of Berlin Jewry at the current session of the General Council of the World Jewish Congress, reported here today. He told the parley that an office to deal with problems of restitution of Jewish property will be opened in Berlin next week.
Speakers at the session expressed regret that Israel made official purchases at the Leipzig Fair. They also deplored the fact that “some quarters in Israel” are endeavoring to spread the idea that German workers were never anti-Semitic. Delegates representing the Central Committee of Liberated Jews in the American Zone of Germany regretted the forthcoming departure of Harry Greenstein, adviser on Jewish Affairs to the American high command.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, acting president of the World Jewish Congress, declared that the economic reconstruction of Germany is inevitable but that world public opinion must be kept aware of the danger of reconstruction before the full democratization of Germany.
He announced that the differences which have arisen within the ranks of the World Jewish Congress between western communities and those in countries behind the Iran Curtain have remained unsolved since the communities of Eastern European countries did not send any representatives to the current session of the General council. Dr. Goldmann stressed the importance of the participation of North African Jewry in the World Jewish Congress.
