The amendments to the citizenship law by which citizenship would have been granted to all persons resident in Latvia since Aug. 1. 1914 who were in the country on Nov. 18, 1918 when the Latvian Republic was proclaimed were rejected a the last meeting of the Sejm.
The rejection of the amendments was entirely unexpected. The Government parties had promised to vote for the amendments and it was believed that they would be passed without difficulty. At the last moment, however. the Government Parties decided to vote against the amendments. The result is that thousands of Jews in Latvia continue to be technically aliens. The Jewish deputies have. as a protest against the rejection of the amendments, gone into opposition to the Government.
