President Lyndon B. Johnson tonight received the 1965 America’s Democratic Legacy Award from B’nai B’rith’s Anti-Defamation League for his “distinguished contribution to the enrichment of our democratic heritage.”
The award was presented at a dinner in the President’s honor by Abraham Feinberg, of New York, who said that the nation and the ADL were grateful “for his skillful and devoted leadership which led to the passage of the 1964 civil rights act,” and for his “firm commitment to a society in which the inherent worth and dignity of man is accepted, respected, and utilized in elevating and enriching our national life.” (president Johnson had not yet delivered his address at the ADL dinner as this issue went to press.)
