Jordan returned its ambassador to Israel. Ma’aruf Bakhit, a retired Jordanian army general who helped broker his country’s 1994 peace accord with Israel, took up his new position in Tel Aviv on Sunday. The last ambassador was recalled shortly after Israeli-Palestinian fighting erupted in 2000, and Bakhit’s appointment was among regional reconciliation efforts agreed upon at this month’s peace summit in Sharm el-Sheik.
