Greater Kansas City joined other communities throughout the nation in a 24-hour Vigil for Soviet Jewry. Twenty-five programs scheduled at half-hour and hourly intervals were presented by as many organizations. The programs included appropriate religious services, choral groups from churches and synagogues, youth groups, singing freedom songs, poetry readings in Russian and Yiddish and English, dramatic readings, films, and panel discussions.

The Kansas City Conference for Soviet Jewry, the Jewish Community Relations Bureau and the Jewish Community Center — sponsors of the Vigil — were joined by the Kansas City Baptist Fellowship, the Kansas City-St. Joseph Catholic Diocese, the Kansas City Council of Churches, and many other Jewish and community-wide organizations.
