King Abdullah II of Jordan urged President Bush to press Israel to negotiate with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Abdullah wrote to Bush on May 18, three days before Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s arrival to present his case for unilateral Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank. Israel is isolating the Palestinian Authority now that it is governed by Hamas, a terrorist group.
