Jeane Kirkpatrick, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, warned at her first press conference here today that any move to expel Israel from the world organization would be regarded by the Reagan Administration “as illegal and undesirable and extremely noxious in its consequences.” She declined, however, to give any details of possible U.S. action in response to a move to suspend Israel from the UN.
Asked if the Reagan Administration would reassess its position that the Israeli settlements in the occupied Arab territories are “not illegal,” Kirkpatrick replied, “I believe that the President said that he regarded the settlements as not illegal.” She added, however, that the Administration’s general policy toward the Middle East and other major crisis areas “is under review.”
