Residents of Kiryat Shemona, scene of heavy terrorist shelling and rocketing across the border during the two weeks before the cease-fire went into effect July 24, today staged a general strike. They protested delays in payment by the government of compensation for damage and loss of property caused by the barrages which kept them in shelters for nearly two weeks.

The government-nominated town council has, meanwhile, agreed to re-instate five municipal workers dismissed for leaving the township during the shelling and absenting themselves from work without permission.

The municipal workers committee and the local labor council had threatened to strike if their colleagues were not immediately re-instated while investigations were conducted into claims that the army and police had ordered all residents to remain under shelter, thus encouraging the widespread evacuation of the town.
